A note for all you northerners out there...

Okay.

So... a coat update.

I bought (for real this time, I sold/gave away my other too-big Canada Goose jacket last week) my new parka.

It is the Canada Goose Solstice. I heart it. It is very pretty, and warm. Very warm. And expensive. VERY expensive.

I feel a little bit like the only store in PEI that sells Canada Goose gear may have ripped me off.

Here's where your nothernites come in.

How much do the Canada Goose parkas run up north? Mine (pictured below) cost me 580 + tax. Coming to a grandish total of 615.

Does it sound like I've been "had" (eh Mugsy?)?

I checked weaverdevore.ca ... but including the $50 shipping and tax.... I would only end up saving like 20 bucks.

Thoughts? Please any help is realllly appreciated!

Thanks!

J

Mine cost me about $500, but it's ugly and ginormous! I think you paid what they are worth, not to say you scored a deal, but that sounds fare.

My e-mail is under my blogger complete profile, send me a shout.

Ours cost around $400 each, but we went to a local Army/Navy story where my mother-in-law knows the owner and beat him down on the price. (she may have literally beat him. She can be scary like that)

You are always better off buying cold weather gear in the south. If you buy it up north they know they've got you. You're going to need it sooner or later and they know it. I've seen coats go for around $700-$800 in Iqaluit.

Trust me, once it hits around -70 with windchill in Rankin, it will be the best money you've spent in your life.

Hey all,
Thanks so much for your responses thus far. I've only been out of school for 5 months, and still have that little screaming student in me that is freaking out over spending my hard-earned cashloa so "frivolously".
I now feel much more relieved.
Thanks!

Look at it this way. The coat isn't frivilous. The coat is one of the most important items you will buy if you want to survive in the north.

Plus, before you move back south you can likely sell the coat if you want and make back a good portion of what you paid.

Think of it as an essential part of your own personal spacesuit, along with those moon boots... ;) And if you some how end up with a snowmobile helmet on you will have completed the package, and you will then know what it feels like to go into space.

We got our puppy from someone in town. He's about 6 months now and costing us A LOT! But we do have dog food coming up on the barge so that should help. It's our first dog and it was a big decision for us. My only advice is that you may want to wait until the spring....unless you're planning on keeping it in the house.

As for some of your posts, I lucked out and got a used Goose-down parka for $250 before coming here. I ended up sewing myself a parka last winter and there are a lot of women here that could make you one if you wanted - but you still made the right move coming prepared.

Good luck with your move! I can't wait to hear about your first trip to the grocery store.
